I work intuitively, observing and responding to moods and places and I have a curiosity for combining materials and testing the associations we have with different aesthetics. Often, this includes recycling found materials and exploring the experience of low and high art.

My process involves building and layering, responding to the unexpected and observing how materials behave. I often then create a sense of control or structure as a reaction, usually in the form of a grid or linear features, which connects with the duality of order and chaos that runs through much of my work. The layering of the line or grid helps me express a proclivity for control and order and simultaneous perceptions of uncertainty, wonder and curiosity of the unknown.

In some work, this relates to a sense of change, disorder or tension I have observed in the landscape and / or an experience of this within myself. My latest body of work was most notably influenced by my experience of fertility treatment and pregnancy.

Niki (b. 1988) is an artist mother who lives and works in Edinburgh. Before having her daughter Ella at the end of 2024, she was awarded the Leith School of Art (LSA) Painting Prize, having completed two years studying Painting at LSA. After graduating from LSA, she put on a joint exhibition, PARALLELS, with Laura Bullock at Outline Gallery Space in Edinburgh. She was awarded this show as the prize for the Outline Gallery Award at the Society of Scottish Artists (SSA) Annual Exhibition in 2023.

Niki also has a geography MA (Hons) degree from St. Andrews University, a Masters in Landscape Architecture (MLA) from Edinburgh University and has been a Chartered Member of the Landscape Institute (CMLI) since 2015. She worked as a landscape architect for eleven years on a range on landscape design and assessment projects throughout Scotland.
